Positive behaviour support is a behavioural science-backed approach to help clients live better lives. To address behaviour, we look at the big picture in the young adult's life and get a detailed understanding of why behaviour may be happening.
What is a positive behaviour support plan?
Positive behaviour support is a plan created by a health professional. Plans help young adults with a disability have a better quality of life, with fewer behaviours that may not be safe.
The plan means changing things in their life so that they can do more of what they enjoy, go places they enjoy, and do less of what they do not enjoy.
Positive behaviour support plans must follow the rules and framework set out by the NDIS.
What does a positive behaviour support plan involve?
Behaviour support outlines strategies to help protect people with a disability’s quality of life.
The plan involves understanding the ‘why’ of behaviour, by:
▶ defining behaviours and gathering data about the behaviours
▶ analysing the data
▶ creating a hypothesis and testing the hypothesis
The information gathered is then put into a report with a plan to assist the people supporting the young person. The plan:
▶ outlines strategies to help the young person communicate their needs including information about what the young person likes and doesn’t like
